Stephen Thomason's Final Reflection

Los Angeles. The name of this city means a lot of things to me. It means work. It means freedom. It means home. Los Angeles was a dream for me just two months ago, now it is all too real. From editing a short to taking pictures of a lake in the middle of a desert this summer was absolutely amazing. I may have spent 95% of my time working, but what I did the other 5% of the time is exactly what I wanted too. I made new friends and I lost some. I found out who I am as a person and I grew A LOT. I absolutely new this summer would be valuable, but honestly I never thought it would be like this.

Valuable experiences are many and regrets are few. I regret not doing more shoots on the weekends. I regret not going to the Price is Right. I regret not getting cookies at Diddy Reese one more time. But I have to say, what I got out of this experience is worth more then the class costs. I now know three new programs (DaVinci, Lightroom, Final Cut Pro). I now know much money goes into renting equipment. I know how to lock down a location. I know how to navigate the majority of Los Angeles. I have more projects for my editing portfolio. I am just astounded by how much I accomplished in two months.

Coming into this summer I never felt like a strong editor. I had edited before and enrolled in the editing class, but honestly never grasped it. It was a foreign idea to me and I always wanted to understand it more. Working primarily as an editor this summer strengthened my skills as an editor. I know now that it is something that is all in the eyes of the editor. I can warp the story to something else or keep to the script. I can change someone’s words and make them say something completely different. I can also change the color of a picture to what it truly is or make it into s different feel. Having this kind of experience helps me as a director and as a writer as well. Knowing that editing is the final edit of a script and knowing how to go into an editing session with the right mindset. This just makes me a stronger filmmaker. It makes me a well-rounded person.

Having Dr. Raimist set up the dinners to meet with real industry professionals is also a huge benefit. We met with producers, directors, writers, and the whole gang of them. Getting to ask questions to people you either have to read a book by or never talk to was really valuable. If you’re serious about having a job in this industry, you need to take this class. You’re given so many tools and so many things are at our disposal that it’s almost hard not to use them and grow. Dr. Raimist actually influenced me a lot from the winter interim trip to the summer trip. Since December of this year my life has changed drastically, I have worked so many jobs and held so many different positions on shoots. I feel so well rounded and I’m exactly where I should be as a film student.

The final thing I want to talk about is what how I as a person grew. My view on where I will be in five to ten years changed so much. I want to be a war photographer. I still want to work in film as a production designer, but I will go to a war zone, and I will take photos that shock the world. I honestly believe I can do whatever I want after this trip. Having heart and determination is all you need. I have so much faith in myself now.

Thank you so much Dr. Raimist  for showing us the city of LA. Thank you for having us in your living room for class and feeding us snacks so we would be awake enough for class. Thank you so much for contacting everyone you knew to come talk with us. Thank you for the greatest summer of my life!

Bonnie's LA Blog

If you are like me, you probably stared at the application and almost fainted from the bolded print revealing the cost. This is especially true as an out-of-state student. With some luck and summer bartending savings, I spent it all to come on this TCF in LA summer program. Now with only $20 remaining, I can tell you it was one of the best investments I could ever make for my future career. So I made a list of all the amazing opportunities this trip can give you like it has given me!

1.  LA is the center of this industry! There are amazing film opportunities going on everyday and if you connect with the right people, you can become a part of them.

This one is from CineGear! I got to try out multiple cameras, lights and other equipment, which are all the latest in technology. I am the girl who is interested in writing mostly, but found myself entranced by the awesome cameras. The best part… they let you play with the cameras! On the right is a picture from Samuel French Bookstore. They have every book on filmmaking and yes I found the comedy section quickly!

Through some connections I managed to meet some USC Grad students. I started as an extra on their set and ended up being a PA. This is the picture of the church we used in the shoot. Later they asked Christina and I to run their social media. Not only did we get valuable experience, but also we raised $5000 for their Kickstarter!

2. We have amazing guest speakers! This industry is all about networking and every week we have great guest speakers, sharing their advice.
The picture on the right shows us after dinner with guest speaker Tom McNulty, the producer of The Spectacular Now! Every guest speaker offers so much insight into the industry. It is hard to believe we get to meet such amazing individuals. On the left are pictures of when we visited Authentic Entertainment. A TCF alumnus is the showrunner there. We got to eat the amazing waffle breakfast (yes they serve eggs benedict on waffles here) while learning how to make the move from TCF to LA.

3. You get to hang out with a group of TCF students, who are just as passionate about the industry as you! The first day we all went to take this picture in front of the Hollywood sign. It is great to come out here with so many friends. These people become your LA family.

Which also means our TCF family does a bunch of side activities together that are included in the trip. This includes The Warner Brother VIP tour, which yes we are sitting at the Central Perk set of Friends.  We also visited The Getty and attended show tapings such as Jimmy Kimmel Live and Chelsea Lately!

4. You are working in the industry as an intern gaining valuable experience for not only your resume, but for your future in this career.

The offices in LA are even more entertaining. This shelf is one of many at the production company/ literary management company where I interned. I learned how to do script coverage and how to file checks and even how to walk dogs. Yes, dogs are allowed in LA offices. On the left is Shelby, who I am going to miss so much! I also met some amazing people at work, who are now some great connections for when I come back.

5. Not to mention that you are here in LA. There are so many things to do that it is almost impossible to squeeze everything into 2 months.

This one was taken at El Matador State Beach on the Pacific Coast Highway. There are numerous beaches, places to hike, places to shop and even places to take a scenic drive. There is never a dull moment in LA! Yes, there is still schoolwork, but it is not so bad to do it by the pool!

This could also lead to other opportunities. We decided to go to Outfest and see the documentary It Gets Better at the DGA Theater. Not to mention we got to meet George Takei from Star Trek! You never know whom you will meet in LA!

Lastly we got to shadow the crew of the Los Angeles Area Emmys and go to the ceremony and after party. Not a bad way to end the summer!

This has been the best and most influential summer of my life. Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible! #TCFinLA
