Final Reflection: Patrick Maddox

It is so hard to believe that TCFinLA ends this week. Although this summer has felt like it has flown by, I know that everyone in this class has learned invaluable lessons about the career that they want to pursue.   Michael Goi stated in his panel at CMF, “Storytellers have to have experiences they can tell stories about, so go out and do things that are worth writing about.”  I can say with full confidence that I seized every opportunity I had to go out and have memorable experiences, and for that reason, I had an incredible summer that I will remember for the rest of my life.

It’s hard to believe that this was 2 whole months ago.
It really is crazy to think about how much all of us have learned since our first week in LA.  In this time we have had countless dinners with industry professionals, hours worth of networking practice, a handful of studio tours, more life lessons than some of us would like to admit, more nights on the beach than some of us would like to admit, and most importantly, more memories than any of us could have imagined.

The most memorable experiences came when we stepped outside of our comfort zone.
Where it was venturing to the Tree of LIfe,
spontaneous trips to Santa Monica,

or acting just a little too confident on the red carpet,

we took full advantage of every opportunity that came our way.

As far as class goes, lessons came both in and out of the classroom.  At the Cinegear Expo, we each learned through getting hands-on experience with some of the latest technology to hit the film industry, as well as networked with some people from every level in the industry.

Some of my most valuable lessons came not only from the classroom, but while I was interning at Thinkfactory Media.  I chose to spend my time this summer interning at Thinkfactory Media, and I could not be more pleased with my experience.  Thinkfactory is a mid-sized production company that specializes in unscripted television (such as Gene Simmons Family Jewels, R&B Divas, and Marriage Bootcamp) as well as Emmy award nominated History Channel Mini-Series’s (such as Hattfields and McCoys and Texas Rising).  While at Thinkfactory, I worked in development, researching material for pitches that would ultimately be picked up and turned into television shows.  I also got hands-on office experience through answering phones and going on runs for executives.

Before coming on this trip, a TCFinLA alum told me that it was the most incredible experience of his life.  And while I can honestly say that this was one of the most incredible experiences of my life, it wasn’t because the summer was a fairytale with no rocky-points, but because the summer was full of rocky-points that we fully embraced and used as learning opportunities.  It was a summer full of late-nights, early mornings, thousands of coffee runs, hundreds of networking conversations, studio tours, panels of speakers, and more facebook polls than anyone should have to see in one life; but it was an experience like no other, with people that I now consider some of my best friends, and I wouldn’t have done it any other way.  Thank you TCFinLA for a leg up on my career in the industry, a great network of friends, and a summer like no other.
